WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE A VEGAN MUG BROWNIE
A microwavable mug: For this recipe, you’ll need a wide microwave safe mug with a capacity of at least 7-8 oz. (200-230g). I found that a wider mug works best because it cooks more evenly, as opposed to a taller mug.
Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: I use Dutch-process cocoa powder for its super rich chocolatey flavor. You can use natural cocoa powder if you wish, just don’t use hot cocoa mix because it’s too sweet. If you’d like to learn the difference between Dutch-process cocoa powder and natural cocoa powder, read my post about it here!
Chocolate chips: I use mini vegan chocolate chips, but you could use regular-sized chocolate chips or even finely chopped dark chocolate!
Flour & Baking powder: I use all-purpose flour and a really small amount of baking powder, just to help give it some lift.
Sugar: I use dark brown sugar (packed), but you could use light brown sugar or regular white sugar, instead.
Oil: I use a bit of light vegetable oil because it really helps to make the brownie moist.
Salt: I use a pinch to enhance the flavors.
Milk: I use sugar-free almond milk, but I’m sure any kind of plant-based milk would work. I would avoid ones with sugar, though.
Kahlua: My secret ingredient! This is optional, but I love using a tiny amount of Kahlua which is phenomenal with chocolate! I also used Kahlua with my rose bliss balls!
ADD-INS & VARIATIONS
The sky’s the limit, really when it comes to add-ins & variations! In the photos, you can see that I piped some vegan chocolate buttercream frosting on top (click here for the recipe)! Here are a few more ideas:
- Add some fruit like a few pitted cherries! The flavor would be similar to my cherry chocolate brownies!
- For some texture, add some chopped nuts or your favorite candies!
- Swirl in some tahini!
- Add some dulce de leche, Nutella, or homemade peanut butter without stirring it so that it sinks a little bit. When done, you’ll have a nice gooey molten center!!!
- Add some marshmallows or chopped candy bars on top or serve it with ice cream!
HOW TO MAKE A VEGAN MUG BROWNIE

STEP 1
Put all the ingredients in a mug.
STEP 2
Then stir everything together well. I use a really small whisk, but you could use a fork, instead. You just want to make sure that you don't have any lumps.
STEP 3
Add a few more chocolate chips on top! Mini chocolate chips are perfect for this recipe!
STEP 4
Then, microwave it! It’s done when you see that the batter has risen nicely and isn’t wet.

TIPS FOR THE BEST VEGAN MUG BROWNIE
- Make sure you’re using a microwave safe mug and that there is no metal or metallic paint on it!
- For best results, use measuring spoons for all the ingredients.
- This recipe is based on my microwave oven which is 800 watts and it took 1.5 minutes. If your microwave is more than 800 watts, you may need to reduce the cooking time by 20-30 seconds.
- All microwaves are different, so keep an eye on it so it doesn’t spill over.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
This dessert is meant to be eaten right away. However, sometimes I like to make it at work, so I just prepare the dry and wet ingredients separately (like in 2 separate jars). Then I just mix both ingredients in a mug and microwave it!
When I make this with chopped chocolate, I usually use a dark chocolate that’s around 72%. You can definitely experiment, just make sure the chocolate is vegan.
You can easily reheat it, although it won’t taste as fresh! Like I said, this dessert is best eaten straight away. If you want to reheat it, though, put it in the microwave for about 5 seconds or so.
