What is Halloween bark?

Halloween bark (also known as boo bark) is a no-bake chocolate treat made by melting chocolate, spreading it into a thin layer, and decorating it with festive toppings like sprinkles and candy. Once it sets, you simply break it into pieces. It's an easy, customizable dessert that's always a hit.

💕 Why you'll love this Halloween bark recipe

  • Super easy & no-bake: You don't need an oven and it's pretty quick to make.
  • Customizable: Use your favorite Halloween candy, sprinkles, or pretzels, or whatever you like!
  • Delicious: It's full of rich chocolate flavor. I love the contrast between the smooth chocolate and all the toppings.
  • Perfect for parties: Break into shards and serve in bowls or treat bags.
  • Make-ahead friendly: Easily prepare it 1-2 days in advance.

What you'll need

Ingredients for Halloween bark

Labeled ingredients for halloween chocolate bark.
  • Chocolate: I combine milk and dark chocolate bars for the best flavor. Milk chocolate adds creaminess and sweetness, while dark chocolate balances it out with a richer taste.
  • Halloween sprinkles & Candy eyes: Both add a festive touch and a nice crunch.

See the recipe card at the end of the post for quantities. 👇

Which chocolate is best?

For the smoothest, most flavorful bark, I recommend using high-quality dark chocolate, like semi-sweet or couverture. Any chocolate with at least 55% cocoa content will melt nicely and give your bark a rich flavor. You could also use quality white chocolate. I often use Lindt white chocolate because it melts so smoothly and tastes incredible.

How to melt chocolate for bark

There are two easy ways to melt chocolate - either on the stovetop using a double boiler or in the microwave. Both work great, it just depends on what you prefer.

  • Double boiler: Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over simmering water, without it touching the water. Stir the chocolate until it's smooth.
  • Microwave: Place the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and heat it in 15-second increments, stirring after each one. Stop as soon as it's melted; if you overheat it, the chocolate can scorch and taste burnt.

Equipment you'll need

  • 10x15 inch (25 X 38 cm) pan
  • parchment paper
  • microwave-safe bowl or heatproof bowl (if using a double boiler)
  • spatula

Kid-Friendly DIY Topping Station

One of my favorite ways to serve this is to turn it into a fun activity with kids! Here are a few ideas:

  • Lay out bowls of toppings like: nuts, sprinkles, pretzels, dried fruit, granola, candy corn, candy eyes, mini marshmallows, chopped Oreo cookies, and leftover Halloween candy.
  • Melt and spread the chocolate onto a lined tray or baking pan.
  • Let the kids decorate their own section with whatever they like.

Fun Toppings for Halloween Bark:

  • mini pretzels + candy eyes → creepy little spiders
  • crushed Oreos + gummy worms → a spooky graveyard
  • candy pumpkins → classic fall colors

Recipe notes

Make-ahead options

Make the bark up to 3 days in advance. Keep it whole on the baking sheet and break into shards right before serving.

Storage Tips & Freezing Instructions

Store in an airtight container at room temperature (in a cool, dry spot) for about 1 week. Or keep it well-covered in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

To freeze, wrap the bark tightly in plastic wrap, then place it in an freezer-safe container or freezer bag. Freeze bark pieces for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.

Serving Ideas

  • Place pieces of bark in clear treat bags tied with orange and black ribbons for gifts or party favors.
  • Arrange them in bowls or jars for a snack table.
  • Use smaller shards as cupcake toppers or to decorate cakes.

✅ Tips for success

  • Use quality chocolate: The better the chocolate, the better the bark. It makes all the difference in flavor and texture.
  • Don't skip the parchment paper: It makes lifting and breaking the bark so much easier.
  • Rustic or neat shards? Break with your hands for rustic pieces, or slice with a sharp knife for even edges.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make Halloween bark without candy melts?

Yes. You can use dark chocolate, semi-sweet, or couverture chocolate, they all melt smoothly and work great for bark.

How do I keep toppings from falling off?

Make sure to press larger toppings gently into the chocolate before it sets.

Can I use white chocolate?

Absolutely. White chocolate makes a great contrast for colorful toppings.

Can I color white chocolate for Halloween bark?

Yes. You can add a tiny amount of oil-based or candy coloring to melted white chocolate. Don't use liquid food coloring because it can make the chocolate seize.

Equipment

  • jelly roll pan (10x15 inches (25 X 38 cm, or similar size)
  • parchment paper

Ingredients

  • 1 pound good-quality chocolate, like couverture chocolate, but semi-sweet or dark chocolate with at least 55% cocoa works well, too I use half milk and half dark chocolate (453g)
  • Halloween sprinkles and candy eyes

Note:

For best results, please read through the full post before beginning the recipe.

Instructions

  • Line the pan with parchment paper and set aside.
  • Chop the chocolate into small pieces and place in a microwave-safe bowl. Melt in 15-second increments in the microwave, stirring after each increment until the chocolate has melted and is completely smooth. Or, melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl placed over a pot of gently simmering water, stirring continuously until smooth.
1 pound good-quality chocolate, like couverture chocolate, but semi-sweet or dark chocolate with at least 55% cocoa works well, too
  • Pour the melted chocolate onto the prepared pan and spread it evenly. You don't need to go all the way to the edges - that way, the bark will be about about ¼ inch thick (0.6 cm).
  • Add the sprinkles and candy eyes on top. Gently press the larger toppings into the chocolate before it sets so they stick.
    Halloween sprinkles and candy eyes
  • Place the pan in the fridge for about 40 - 60 minutes, until the chocolate is completely hardened.
  • Once set, break it into pieces with your hands or cut it into shards with a sharp knife.
  • Enjoy! 🎃

Notes

Storage & Freezing
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, or in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Freeze for up to 2 months. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and store in a freezer-safe container or freezer bag. Thaw in the fridge overnight before serving.
Best Chocolate
Use high-quality dark or white chocolate (at least 55% cocoa). Couverture or semi-sweet chocolate melts smoothly and gives the best flavor — I like using Lindt.
