Here in Greece, we're fortunate to have plenty of fig trees. When fig season comes around, I always make these easy roasted figs in honey to serve over Greek yogurt or Vanilla Ice Cream.

What you'll need
Ingredients for honey roasted figs
- Fresh figs - Any variety will do, including Black Mission figs.
- Honey - For this recipe, I used Greek flower honey, but you can use your favorite honey. For a vegan alternative, use maple syrup, instead.
- Dark brown sugar - Together with the honey, dark brown sugar helps make the figs sticky sweet.
- Spices - I love using a combination of cinnamon and nutmeg.
- Cognac/Brandy - It adds a nice aroma and really captures the overall flavor without being boozy. Instead of cognac or brandy, you could add a sweet wine, like Mavrodafni.
- Walnuts - Nuts are optional, but they add a nice texture. You could add some pistachios, too.
See the recipe card at the end of the post for quantities.
Equipment you'll need
- a baking dish - I used a 9 x 6.5 inch / 23 x 16.5 cm pan.
How to make honey roasted figs
- Cut the figs into quarters, but not all the way through.
2. Line the figs in a baking dish and use your fingers to open them like a flower.
3. Mix the honey and sugar together and add a teaspoon of it in the center of each fig. Then pour the cognac/brandy over the figs and add the cinnamon sticks and nutmeg.
Then bake the figs until they soften and create a caramelized syrup.
Recipe notes
Storage tips
You can store these figs in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Variations
- Add them to your cheese board - Figs roasted with honey are wonderful with crumbled goat cheese, blue cheese or mascarpone for an appetizer.
- Make it decadent - For a rich, sweeter flavor, you could drizzle some melted chocolate or homemade chocolate syrup on top. This homemade salted caramel sauce is also incredible with honey and figs.
- Vanilla honeyed figs - Vanilla goes hand in hand with figs. Instead of cinnamon sticks, you could add a vanilla pod. Just cut in half lengthwise and scrape out all the seeds using the tip of a knife. Then sprinkle the seeds over the figs before baking.
Tips for success
- Use Fresh Fruit: For best results, use fresh and ripe figs. Make sure they are not mushy.
- Cut Properly: When you cut the figs, make sure you don’t cut all the way through. That way they keep their pretty flower shape after baking.
- Use the right pan: Use a small baking pan so that the figs are close together and hold their shape. I used a 9 x 6.5 inch / 23 x 16.5 cm pan. If you don't care about the shape, you could use a baking sheet, instead.
- Watch the Time: Don't overcook the figs! They should be softened and slightly sticky and jammy.
- Let Them Rest: Allow the roasted figs to cool slightly before serving.
